Hydro-garden version 2.0

Posted in April 26th, 2009
by John in Projects

Here we go again with the hydroponic garden. I built a new system, improving on last year’s design.  This year, rather than starting from seed, I used plants from Territorial Seed. This gave me three varieties of tomato and three varities of pepper without having to buy 300 seeds. Here’s the freshly tilled and planted [...]

The big dig

Posted in December 13th, 2008
by John in Projects

I finally harvested the bounty from the “pomato” plant. Yes, we successfully grew both tomatoes and potatoes on the same plant!! Aida has dibs on the little potatoes so I guess Nichole and I will be splitting the “big” one.

Today, I picked a peck of peppers.

Red Cayenne, Anaheim Chili, Jalapeno, Poblano, and a (not quite) Purple
The pepper plants:

“Under the hood” of the container that the peppers are growing in:

The blueberries have been ripening over the past couple of weeks. Since we don’t have a very big crop, we’ve had a strict rationing program in [...]

Peppers

Here are the hydroponic peppers that were started earlier this year. I moved them outside a month or two ago and they’re really growing. Three of the six plants have peppers that are almost ready to pick and the others are flowering. We have at least four varieties from the mixd seed packet that I [...]

Pomato pictures

The pomatoes came home from the recovery room yesterday. One of them looks like it’ll definitely survive and the other is a little soft but should make it. The one that’s doing better was grafted as a double (two tomato plants on one potato stem). I kept the best one and removed the other. You [...]

A pomato?

Posted in May 23rd, 2008
by John in Projects

After Professor Bradshaw’s presentation, we learned a little about propagation of plants like potatoes, yams, and lilies. Then we did an experiment in grafting a tomato plant onto a potato plant to create a single plant that grows potatoes underground and tomatoes above. I’m really hoping that my grafts take because I want to see [...]

Johnny’s Apple Tree

Posted in May 10th, 2008
by John in Projects

My plant propagation class did a grafting lab this week. Grafting was a big reason I wanted to take this class so I’ve been looking forward to this lab.
We grafted a small apple tree. Mine is a “Karmijn de Sonnaville” aka “Karmine” which is supposed to be one of the best tasting apples even though [...]

How does your garden grow?

Posted in April 18th, 2008
by John in Projects

This year, mine grows in water. This is my little experiment in hydroponics. In the first picture, I have peppers growing in a system where the roots dangle down and are constantly sprayed with a nutrient solution. The second picture is a “lettuce raft” where lettuce floats in a nutrient solution on styrofoam. The goal [...]
